Chlamydia trachomatis is a common sexually transmitted bacterium, infecting the genitourinary tract, eyes and respiratory system—many cases are asymptomatic, but untreated infections can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility and ectopic pregnancy in women, and urethritis in men. It also spreads via vertical transmission during pregnancy.
